Long Story Short

Netflix

The second season of Wednesday is about to dominate the press cycle, so let's offer a little reprieve by focusing on the other notable new releases coming to Netflix in August. Fellow BoJack Horseman fans, clear your calendars on Aug. 22 for Long Story Short, the new animated comedy from BoJack creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg that follows a family throughout the years. It may not have as many anthropomorphic animals with punny Hollywood names as BoJack did, but we're guessing it will have an ample amount of devastating gut punches to go along with the family humor.

Also coming in August is Hostage, a British limited series thriller about a prime minister (Suranne Jones) who must walk the fine line between family and politics when her husband is taken by terrorists, and the documentary The Truth About Jussie Smollett?, which goes deep into the 2019 incident that saw Smollett on trial for staging a hate crime.

Other releases include the music documentary Devo, Season 3 of celebrity chef David Chang's live cooking show Dinner Time Live With David Chang, Season 2 of the teen romance My Life With the Walter Boys, and Genndy Tartakovsky's Fixed, a crass (maybe too crass) animated film about a dog about to get neutered. Tartakovsky gets a lifetime pass for his past work, including Primal, and it looks like he might be using that pass here. And then of course there's Wednesday Season 2, which debuts Part 1 early in the month.

Here are the shows and movies coming to Netflix in August — as well as what's leaving.

Wednesday Season 2 Part 1 (Aug. 6)

Wednesday Season 2 is coming, and the excitement is very much alive for a show that's all about death — and Wednesday Addams' (Jenna Ortega) fascination with death. Created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar and executive produced by Tim Burton, the Netflix series is promising to return bigger and better, with new cast members including Steve Buscemi, Billie Piper, Joanna Lumley, Thandiwe Newton, and Christopher Lloyd — and even an appearance by Lady Gaga as a legendary Nevermore teacher. -Kat Moon [Trailer] [Everything to know about Wednesday Season 2

Devo (Aug. 19)

New wave post-punk group Devo, the art band behind the '80s hit "Whip It," is the subject of this rock documentary, as if the title didn't explain that. Director Chris Smith, he of Tiger King fame, is behind the film, which looks at the formation of the band and its influences using interviews with Devo members and rare archival footage. [Trailer]

Hostage (Aug. 21)

No one does thrillers quite like the British, which is why we're high on this tense-looking limited series. Hostage stars Suranne Jones as the prime minister, whose husband is taken hostage by bad guys, and further complicating things, the visiting French president is blackmailed, pitting the two leaders against each other in a fight to save their political careers, and possibly their own lives. This is a good chance to see why Jones, who has had some exposure in America thanks to HBO's Gentleman Jack, is so beloved in her native England. [Teaser]

Long Story Short (Aug. 22)

BoJack Horseman was one of the great TV shows of the past 10 years, which makes us especially excited about Raphael Bob-Waksberg's new animated series, Long Story Short. Netflix hasn't released many details about the series, but so far we know that the animated comedy (likely thing for Bob-Waksberg to make) will follow a family through the years, jumping around from childhood to adulthood and back again. The voice cast includes Abbi JacobsonMax GreenfieldNicole ByerDave Franco, and Ben Feldman-Allison Picurro [Teaser

The Truth About Jussie Smollett? (Aug. 22)

Should you trust a documentary with a title that is both a question and an incomplete sentence? Especially when one of the words is "truth"? Why are you asking us, film? You're supposed to be telling us the truth! But here we are, as the producers behind The Tinder Swindler look into the bizarre 2019 case of actor Jussie Smollett, who was accused of staging a hate crime against himself using extras from the show that made him popular, Fox's Empire, after initially garnering a wave of public sympathy for what he allegedly endured. Smollett went to court twice for the incident, but both times the charges were either dropped or reversed. He later settled out of court with the city of Chicago and continues to deny that he staged the attack. The documentary supposedly features new evidence while navigating the murky truth, as well as the key component that we're all here for: exclusive interviews with Smollett.
