Go America, it's your birthday. Celebrate by watching a U.S. president with a big mouth blow things up! Not on the nightly news, but in Prime Video's original action-comedy movie Heads of State, which stars John Cena as America's commander in chief and Idris Elba as his British counterpart as they fend off an attack by mysterious foreign forces. Yes, it wasn't long ago that Prime Video released a movie in which Viola Davis played the president of the United States who blasted her way through a bunch of bad guys, but straight-to-streaming movies are running out of ideas, so let's let this one slide.

Prime Video's other new releases in July include the Bosch spin-off Ballard, starring Maggie Q as an LAPD officer who catches crooks while also unearthing corruption in the department (and features a drop-in by the man himself, Harry Bosch). And, for a throwback, Sherlock, the British detective series starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, joins the streamer's library at the top of the month.

Below, you'll find our picks for the best shows and movies to watch on Amazon Prime Video in July, as well as everything coming to Prime Video this month.

The best new movies and shows on Prime Video in July

Benedict Cumberbatch, Sherlock

Sherlock Season 1 (July 1)

The show that made Benedict Cumberbatch a household tongue twister won multiple prestigious awards over its four-season run, thanks to updating Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's legendary character for the modern age. Cumberbatch plays Sherlock Holmes, a consultant for British police, and Martin Freeman plays his partner-in-solving-crime, John Watson, forming a formidable duo who crack the toughest of cases using Holmes' trademark skills of detection and observation. And, if you believe internet shippers, a lot of unresolved sexual tension. Prime Video only lists the three-episode first season as coming to the service... for now. [Trailer]

Heads of State (July 2)

If you can ignore everything that's happened in politics over the last 12 years or so and suspend disbelief that John Cena could become president of the United States (and really, would that be so bad?), then you might like this action comedy from Nobody director Ilya Naishuller. The great cast includes Cena as U.S. President (and former action movie star) Will Derringer and Idris Elba as U.K. Prime Minister Sam Clarke, who must overcome their political rivalry when they become targets of foreign bad guys. Then there are explosions and wisecracks. Adding to the mayhem are Priyanka Chopra Jonas, the surprisingly ubiquitous Jack Quaid, Paddy Considine, Stephen Root, and Carla Gugino. OK fine, I will watch it. [Trailer]

Ballard (July 9)

In Michael Connelly's TV universe, good cops get shows titled after their surname. The Bosch spin-off Ballard follows Maggie Q's LAPD detective Renée Ballard as she catches bad guys, both on the street and in her own department. Keep your eyes peeled for Harry Bosch (Titus Welliver), who will be popping up here and there in the series. [Trailer]
