New Max and HBO TV Shows and Movies in June 2025

Max is dead, long live HBO Max. The streaming platform formerly known as Max will henceforth be known as HBO Max, which also happens to be the name it previously had and had no reason to change in the first place. The reversion hasn't been put into effect yet, but consider us on name watch until further notice. Anyway, The Gilded Age is returning for its third season in June. More Carrie Coon on our TVs!

On the movies side, the biggest acquisition of the month is undoubtedly A Minecraft Movie, which was a huge hit at the box office and can now be a huge hit in your home. (But this time you will have to clean up the popcorn after the chicken jockey scene.) After teasing us with a TBD streaming debut date for weeks, Max has announced that A Minecraft Movie will hit the platform on June 20. HBO is also putting out a trio of documentaries this month: The Mortician, a docuseries about the morally questionable practices of a 1980s funeral home; Enigma, which explores transgender identity and legacy; and Mariska Hargitay's My Mom Jayne, about her mother, the actress Jayne Mansfield.

The best new HBO and Max movies and shows in June

Max streams all HBO shows and movies when they debut on HBO. But not all shows and movies on Max make it to HBO. We'll designate Max exclusives where appropriate.

The Mortician (June 1, HBO)

"I don't put any value in anybody after they're gone and dead," David Sconce says in the trailer for the documentary The Mortician. Which, fine, that's an opinion you are allowed to hold. The problem is that Sconce is a mortician whose work involves people who are gone and dead. In 1989, Sconce was sent to prison for five years on charges of mutilating corpses, mass incinerations, and hiring hitmen to assault rival morticians while he was head of the L.A.-based Lamb Funeral Home, and was jailed again for parole violations, finally getting out in 2023. This three-part docuseries revisits Sconce's crimes and interviews those involved, including Sconce. -Tim Surette [Trailer]

The Gilded Age Season 3 (June 22, HBO)

Good news for people who like to watch HBO shows starring Carrie Coon: The Gilded Age is returning for Season 3. The battle between old and new money in 1800s New York continues, and it's as gossipy and scandalous as ever. Bertha (Coon) and George Russell (Morgan Spector) will continue their ascent to the top of high society, Agnes (Christine Baranski) has trouble accepting her sister Ada's (Cynthia Nixon) new position as lady of the house, and Peggy (Denée Benton) just might fall in love again. A Minecraft Movie (June 20, Max)

If you have a child under the age of 13, you may have already seen A Minecraft Movie in theaters. (Apparently a lot of people saw it in theaters!) If you haven't, now's your chance: In Jared Hess' adaptation of the extremely popular video game, four misfits set out to escape the cubic world they've been pulled into with the help of a crafter named Steve (Jack Black).
