And Sara Waisglass teases what's next for Max after a tough Season 3

Felix Mallard and Antonia Gentry, Ginny & Georgia

The Millers usually have the chaotic household market covered on Netflix's Ginny & Georgia, but the Bakers decided to give them a run for their money in Season 3. While Georgia (Brianne Howey) stood trial for murder, Marcus (Felix Mallard) continued to battle his depression. As his mood slipped, it became increasingly obvious that Marcus was self-medicating to deal with the negative feelings and became reliant on alcohol to get him through the school day.
"He's struggling with depression. He just wants to feel normal. Drinking is part of the teen experience that helps him feel normal, because when he's drunk he doesn't feel depressed," showrunner and executive producer Sarah Glinski explained to TV Guide. "I think he's really grasping at any way to get through day after day. We think it's so interesting with Marcus because he's got a great family. He has people who cara about him. He's obviously a good human being. To see this kid struggling with everything is really interesting because it's not necessarily something that everyone walking through the halls of this high school knows that he's dealing with."
Marcus and Ginny (Antonia Gentry) broke up at the end of Season 2 so they could each focus on their respective mental health. That proved to be easier said than done in Season 3 as they still had to go to school together and see each other across the street. Ginny tried her best to move on but ultimately realized that Marcus still had her heart. Unfortunately, she realized it just as the Bakers decided that Marcus needed rehab to get hold of his issues and have a real shot at healing, leaving their relationship in unknown territory.
More on Netflix:
"It definitely ends on a question mark," series creator Sarah Lampert said. "He's off to rehab. They just kissed. They shared this moment. They are kind of together, and Ginny wrote him this poem saying, 'I'm going to be with you through this. I'm still here.' So, it's complicated."
Mallard's primary hope for his character is that Marcus gets the tools he needs in rehab to actually start putting himself back together. The relationship with Ginny has to come after that.
"I just hope he learns a bit of self-love, a bit of self-care. At his core, he feels a lot, and he doesn't know how to deal with it. He wants to love and be loved," the actor told TV Guide. "All of that energy has nowhere to go. It kind of has to be let out in some way. I think with a lot of young men that comes out in violence, which we kind of see with Marcus to a certain extent. Hopefully, he can learn to deal with it in a much healthier way so that he can show up for the people he loves and be the person that he wants to be."
Gentry is also hopeful that rehab will help Marcus in a way that his other treatments haven't before, but she's not sure what it'll mean for Marcus and Ginny's relationship in the long term.
"I hope that Marcus heals and gets the help that he really needs. Obviously, he struggles with his mental health in a very different way than Ginny does. The only way for him to recover is to really remove him and take him to a place where he can truly start on that road," she said. However, she has some concerns about what might change while Marcus is away, especially considering the choices that Ginny makes in the Season 3 finale to get her mother acquitted from those murder charges. "He might recover and come back to a completely different Ginny, who is now evil," the actress joked. "He could also change. I think, in the end, I want them to be together. I love those two, but I genuinely have no idea what is in store for them."

Amanda Matlovich/NetflixWhile Marcus is focusing on his sobriety in rehab, his twin sister Max (Sara Waisglass) is trying to repair her fractured friendships. After two seasons of being the Wellsbury High drama queen, Max finally learned to take a step back in Season 3, but her friends were still holding her past mistakes against her and refusing to see her growth. They slowly iced her out throughout the season, leaving her alone to confront Marcus about his drinking and get him the help he needs. The formerly mighty friendship circle of MANG was in tatters by the end of the season, with Max on a social island by herself.
"We wanted to explore authentic teen relationships. Everything Max and MANG have been through over the last three seasons is really authentic to female friendships in high school. It shifts and flows and it breaks apart, and it repairs. That's really what we wanted to look at with them," Glinski said about exploring the friendship drama. "For Max specifically, she cares so deeply and she's so loyal. She's waiting for anyone to return that because she expects a lot from her friends and the people around her."
Waisglass also has faith that Max can bring the group back together and insisted that Max wouldn't be investing in a new friend group when she's so attached to the one she already has.
"I don't think she will look for new friends. I think she will try to get MANG back. She's such a loyal character, and when you hurt a character like that, they're bound to go a little nuts," she admitted. However, she's also not blind to how much Max has changed over the course of the series. "I do admire how much Max grew and how deeply she tried to be there for her friends. Give her a break!"
We agree! Justice for MANG and healing for Marcus in Season 4, pretty, pretty, please.
