It's been nearly two decades since Dexter originally premiered on Showtime back in 2006, and one of the network's flagship franchises is apparently still as strong as ever — the prequel series Dexter: Original Sin premiered at the end of 2024, and the second sequel series, Dexter: Resurrection, is next up on the schedule for Paramount+ with Showtime. While it may be tempting to make some jokes about Dexter murdering dead horses this time out, the premise for this newest series is actually pretty juicy.

Like New Blood before it, Resurrection is a sequel series that focuses primarily on Dexter (Michael C. Hall) as he continues to search for a more peaceful way to exist, this time by going to New York and being recruited into some sort of murder society. After Original Sin took us all the way back to the beginning of Dexter's murder career, it'll be fascinating to return to the elder version of the character for this new story in Resurrection. Read on for everything we know so far about what to expect from the next Dexter series.

Dexter: Resurrection latest news

Finally, we've got a real trailer for Dexter: Resurrection, and it's a beefy one that lays out exactly what sort of beautiful mess Dexter is about to walk into this time. Take a look below.

Dexter: Resurrection trailer

This two-minute trailer lays out the setup for Resurrection — Angel is back, and he finally found out about Dexter's whole deal, and Dexter is about to join what appears to be a secret society of serial killers in New York City. That sounds pretty awesome!

When does Dexter: Resurrection premiere?

Dexter: Resurrection is scheduled to debut on Paramount+ with Showtime on July 11 with two episodes. If you prefer to watch on Showtime, it will make its cable debut on July 13 at 8/7c.

What is Dexter: Resurrection's story?

Resurrection picks up where New Blood left off, with Harrison (Jack Alcott) shooting his father in the snow. Despite previous confirmation from showrunner Clyde Phillips that the character was dead, it seems that's no longer the case.

As we saw in the opening moments of Original Sin, doctors got Dexter's heart beating again, and the cold essentially saved him. The twist set up the prequel, as Dexter looked back on the decisions made by his younger self (played by Patrick Gibson). However, it also sets up Resurrection

"In the beginning of Resurrection, the doctor says to Dexter, 'Had you been shot in the summertime, you'd be dead, but you were shot in zero-degree weather. And we ripped you open, and were able to get you minutes before you died,'" Phillips explained to TV Insider.

Judging by the trailer, Dexter will wake up in the hospital without any apparent legal issues. After a visit from Angel, who now knows about Dexter's extracurricular activities, Dexter packs up and heads to New York. There, he's recruited by a rich guy named Leon Prater (Peter Dinklage), who seems to have assembled some sort of serial killer society — which also apparently already counts characters played by Neil Patrick HarrisKrysten Ritter, Eric Stonestreet, and David Dastmalchian among its numbers. It's probably not the best idea to introduce Dexter to these people, since he'll definitely try to kill them. But maybe that's the point — a serial killer battle royale on the streets of New York City.

We know that Resurrection isn't set up to be a limited series, and there is potential for several seasons. Given that information, we'd like to add the theory that Dexter somehow works with police to hunt down other serial killers and struggles to contain his Dark Passenger when he can't kill.

One thing that Dexter: Resurrection definitely won't do is forget Dexter's lengthy history — this reboot is aimed at people who like Dexter already. And so a pair of prominent dead folks from Dexter's past will be returning in some manner for Dexter: Resurrection, as both John Lithgow and Jimmy Smits are joining the cast for Season 2, according to Deadline. Smits played Miguel Prada in Season 3, an assistant district attorney who cozied up to Dexter after Dexter killed his brother. Lithgow was Season 4's Arthur Mitchell, a seemingly devoted family man and high school teacher who'd been secretly operating as a serial murderer called the Trinity Killer for decades. Lithgow also appeared in Dexter: New Blood in a flashback.

Hall is back as the titular character, and rest of the regular cast includes Jack Alcott as Dexter's son Harrison, James Remar as Dexter's dead dad Harry, and David Zayas as Detective Batista, all of whom return from the original series. In an interview with Variety, Hall hinted that, "There's a whole cast of characters that populate his wider world and have the potential to re-emerge." He's not exaggerating, as you can see from the cast list below, which features four big names who are new to the universe of Dexter.

Peter Dinklage, best known as Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones, will play Leon Prater, a billionaire venture capitalist with some dark secrets. Protecting him as his head of security is Uma Thurman's Charley, a former Special Ops officer. Neil Patrick Harris, Krysten RitterDavid Dastmalchian, and Steve Schirripa have also joined the series in guest roles. John Lithgow and Jimmy Smits are also confirmed to return to the franchise, according to Deadline.

Behind the scenes, Phillips is back to showrun the series while long-time writer Scott Reynolds is also on board. Marcos Siega, who directed some of the original series and directed/executive produced New Blood, is also back as one of Resurrection's directors.
