The Netflix action-comedy anime following a retired assassin is a hit

Sakamoto Days
TMS/ShueishaThe old gangster movie trope "I keep trying to get out, but they keep pulling me back in" is very apropos for the Netflix anime Sakamoto Days, an adaptation of Yuto Suzuki's action-comedy manga of the same name. As our hero, Taro Sakamoto, attempts to live a quieter life after retiring from being Japan's top hitman, he seeks peace in his new family and as the owner of a convenience store. Unfortunately, a bounty on his life means that half of his customers are professional assassins trying to kill him. It's Kim's Convenience meets John Wick, and it's a surprisingly lethal (and funny) combination.
After tearing through the first 11 episodes of the Netflix exclusive, many will be looking for Sakamoto Days Season 2, but the upcoming episodes aren't part of Season 2. The first season of Sakamoto Days has been divided into two parts, or "cours" as they're called in Japan, with the second cours coming very soon. And if you are a manga fan who was disappointed in the anime adaptation, there are signs that these coming episodes aimed to address many of the initial complaints. We'll get into that, as well as the Sakamoto Days release date, trailer, and more, below.
More on Netflix and anime:
Sakamoto Days Season 1 Part 2 will premiere on July 14, and will once again stream weekly alongside the Japanese airings. The first season of Sakamoto Days was split into two parts, or cours, with Season 1 Part 1 debuting on Jan. 11 and streaming weekly on Netflix to coincide with the Japanese release.
The trailer for Season 1 Part 2 was released in mid-May 2025 and shows off a ton of action sequences, a lot of them beautifully stylized, which some fans of the manga think was missing from Season 1 Part 1 of the anime. Of course, more fighting means less of the day-in-the-life comedy that made the series stand out from other shows. Is that what we really want!?!?!?
Taro Sakamoto was unparalleled as a top assassin, but a chance encounter in a shop with a beautiful convenience store clerk named Aoi changed his life. Taro instantly fell madly in love with Aoi, left his days as an assassin behind, got married to Aoi, started working at the convenience store, and took a new oath to never kill again at the urging of Aoi. Life after being a murderer-for-hire has reshaped him mentally and physically — he's a very chill dude who has packed on some pounds, becoming unrecognizable from the infamous killer he once was.
But the criminal underworld isn't forgiving, so those who hold a grudge against him interrupt his humble life with attempts at revenge, making Sakamoto Days a slice-of-life comedy about trying to outrun your past with bursts of action and bloody violence. Helping Taro get through his days are Shin Asakura, Taro's former protégé, who has the ability to read minds; Lu Xiaotang, the dim-witted daughter of a crime boss; and Heisuke Mashimo, a sniper who joins the team after failing to assassinate Taro.
