There's a very good chance this prequel story will matter for Season 2 of the main series

Taylor Kitsch, The Terminal List: Dark Wolf
Attila Szvacsek/Prime VideoThe Terminal List was one of Amazon Prime Video's biggest hits when it premiered all the way back in the summer of 2022. While the series was renewed for a second season years ago, that still hasn't materialized. Instead, we're going on a little bit of a detour with the prequel series The Terminal List: Dark Wolf, which will delve into the backstory of Taylor Kitsch's character, Ben Edwards, in order to both explain the outrageous twist ending of the first season of the main series and simultaneously set up Season 2.
It's a fascinating direction for The Terminal List to go in, since the show is an adaptation of Jack Carr's books. But the prequel series Dark Wolf is an original story — though with series author Jack Carr heavily involved with the main series and this prequel as both producer and writer, there's not much to worry about for fans who might be concerned about the adaptation going rogue.
Which is good, because Dark Wolf will be our first new dose of The Terminal List on Prime Video in a while. Let's take a look at everything we know so far.
More on Amazon Prime Video:
The premiere of Dark Wolf is inching closer, and the marketing is ramping up. We've got our first proper trailer now, which you can watch below.
The first full trailer lays out the basic plot. Edwards serves alongside Reece in the SEALs, but he's dishonorably discharged for shooting somebody that he wasn't supposed to shoot during a mission. But that's just where the story begins — from there, he's recruited by the CIA into some sort of grand shadow op. "What we're doing here is gonna echo through time," his new boss (Robert Wisdom) tells him. All right!
There's a lot more Chris Pratt in this trailer than you might expect, but he and Taylor Kitsch aren't the only actors from the main series to pop up in this trailer. We also got an appearance by LaMonica Garrett's Commander Cox — a character who will later end up on Reece's list. This is a beefy trailer.
We also have a smaller teaser, which is heavier on vibes than plot, which you'll also wanna check out.
Dark Wolf will premiere on Aug. 27 with a three-episode drop to kick things off. From there, we'll get one episode per week until the finale on Sept. 24. That makes seven episodes in all.
Warning: This portion of the article will include a major spoiler for Season 1 of The Terminal List
The main story thread of The Terminal List follows Navy SEAL James Reece (Chris Pratt), whose platoon is nearly entirely wiped out during a mission in Syria. Reece's lone fellow survivor mysteriously dies not long after, and Reece is attacked and his family murdered. From there, Reece investigates what turns out to be a sprawling conspiracy, and he puts together a list of folks responsible for it, who he plans to kill — that's the list from the title.
While Dark Wolf takes place before the events of The Terminal List, this will not be a standalone story — it will focus on the story of SEAL-turned-CIA-operative Ben Edwards (Kitsch), Reece's close friend who was revealed at the end of Season 1 to have been part of the murderous conspiracy. Reece killed Edwards for that in the season finale.
Dark Wolf will explore Edwards' past and show both how he became pals with Reece, how he was recruited to the CIA, and how he became a part of the conspiracy against Reece's platoon. Reece himself will appear only in a relatively small guest role, though, as this is Edwards' story through and through.
It's an interesting direction to go in, particularly since there's still no sign of Season 2 of The Terminal List on the horizon. We suspect this new story doesn't exist merely to flesh out this character — it's likely that what happens with Edwards in Dark Wolf will have some bearing on Season 2 of the main series somehow. In fact, we can guarantee it since one of the main characters in Dark Wolf is Mohammed Farooq, a key bad guy from the book that Season 2 will be based on, True Believer.
The Terminal List: Dark Wolf is co-created by main series showrunner David DiGilio and book series author Jack Carr. While a few cast members from The Terminal List Season 1 (and Season 2) will appear, it's mostly new folks in this one.
Season 1 of The Terminal List is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video
