Lola Tung, Gavin Casalegno, Christopher Briney, Sean Kaufman, and Rain Spencer, The Summer I Turned Pretty
Prime VideoThe third and final season of The Summer I Turned Pretty is inching closer. Whether you're Team Conrad or Team Jeremiah, the wait has been tough. But now we have a teaser and a premiere date for showrunner Jenny Han's adaptation of the final part of her trilogy of coming-of-age novels.
Season 2 was quite the roller coaster for Belly (Lola Tung), Conrad (Christopher Briney), and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno), who spent the majority of the season dancing around their love triangle. They dealt with first kisses, devastating breakups, and heartbreaking losses, while the Fisher boys endured the threat of losing their home after their mother died from breast cancer. Team Conrad supporters were left screaming into their pillows after Belly chose to act on her feelings for Jeremiah, setting up a dramatic Season 3.
Here's everything we know so far about The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3, from when it's coming to how many episodes it will contain to who's going to be in the show.
In case you weren't fully ready for what is guaranteed to be a wild final season, Prime Video dropped a large, three-minute trailer teasing the final romantic showdown between the two brothers, Jeremiah and Conrad, who are competing for Belly's affections. Take a look below in the trailer section.
Season 3 of The Summer I Turned Pretty will premiere on July 16, with episodes dropping weekly thereafter. Season 3 will be the final season, as it adapts the the final book in Jenny Han's trilogy of novels.
The big final trailer for Season 3 of The Summer I Turned Pretty (above) starts off in idyllic fashion, showing Belly and Jeremiah deeply in love while they attend college together. But all is not settled with Conrad, Jeremiah's older brother and Belly's first love, and Belly's narration demonstrates how conflicted she is about this love triangle even while she plans her wedding to Jeremiah.
We also got a smaller glimpse at Season 3 in May when Prime Video dropped a minute-long teaser, a montage set to Taylor Swift's "Daylight" that is almost entirely without dialogue, showing Belly and Jeremiah enjoying their new status as a couple. But this is The Summer I Turned Pretty, and the trailer climaxes with Conrad showing up at Belly's door — a sure sign that the love triangle isn't over yet.
Season 3 will feature a total of 11 episodes, an increase from eight episodes in Season 2, which was rolled out weekly, and seven episodes in Season 1, which dropped all at once. Season 3 will be released weekly once again — Prime Video doesn't do binge drops all that often.
Season 1 followed Han's first book in the trilogy, and Season 2 largely stayed faithful to the second novel, It's Not Summer Without You, though the show did take some creative liberties (like introducing Skye and Aunt Julia, both characters not in the books). Season 3 will, naturally, be based on the third and final book, We'll Always Have Summer, and will also bring us to the end of this TV series.
While it's likely that Season 3 will follow the trajectory of the book, in which Belly and Jeremiah go off to college together and experience some serious relationship drama, there is certainly some room to maneuver in the adaptation. Particularly since the author of the novels, Jenny Han, is also serving as the showrunner on this series. "There are going to be surprises," Han told EW as part of an exclusive first look at Season 3. "There are the things that [fans] know and then there are things they think they know, and then there's going to be, hopefully, things that surprise them."
Casalegno told People that Han "is really just strong on staying as true to the books as possible and hitting the main points." Tung echoed her co-star's sentiments, telling the outlet, "There's so many different ways you could go about it. There's a blueprint of a book, which we've been lucky to have for two seasons now, just such a solid blueprint for us, and to have Jenny on set with us has been incredible."
EW also has released exclusive first-look images from Season 3. There are some interesting teases in there, particularly with one image — showing Belly with Jeremiah, and Steven (Sean Kaufman) with Taylor (Rain Spencer), sitting at the beach with Conrad in between, all by himself, which Han says is actually a flashback.
If you're curious what happens in the last book of the series, here is a brief, spoiler-filled rundown: In We'll Always Have Summer, Belly is a freshman in college and has been happily dating Jeremiah. But their relationship turns south when Belly discovers Jeremiah slept with another girl during spring break. In an effort to salvage their relationship, Jeremiah pops the question to Belly, who accepts his marriage proposal even though Conrad continues to run rampant in her mind.
Eventually, Belly and Jeremiah call off their wedding after she admits she never fell out of love with Conrad. But it takes a while before Belly and Conrad resolve their tumultuous love affair. Several years pass before they finally reconnect, and by the end of the story, they get married, fulfilling Conrad's mother's wishes.
The Summer I Turned Pretty cast is getting bigger. On June 4, Prime Video announced that Isabella Briggs and Kristen Connolly are joining the drama as series regulars. The show is also adding new recurring cast members Sofia Bryant, Lily Donoghue, Zoé de Grand'Maison, Emma Ishta, and Tanner Zagarino. No details about their roles have been shared yet.
And here's the main cast we're expecting to return for the upcoming season.
Considering that Taylor Swift has been built into the fabric of The Summer I Turned Pretty from the very beginning (Han told CBS News that listening to Swift's music helped her write the books), it's safe to assume she'll continue to be a major part of the show in Season 3.
Swift's songs have defined Belly and Conrad's romance since the start of the show, and we don't think that will change anytime soon. The first two seasons have already featured over a dozen of Swift's songs — including "Lover," "False God" and "Last Kiss (Taylor's Version)." Key moments in the show have included Swift's needle drops, like "This Love (Taylor's Version)" serving as the soundtrack to Belly and Conrad's first kiss, and "The Way I Loved You (Taylor's Version)," which played as they danced together at the debutante ball.
